David Chavez Moran on the Power of Education

January 26th, 2012 by admin

Daniel Chavez Moran is a retired real estate developer who is now involved as a philanthropist advocating for the economic growth of Latin America. Although a lot of his efforts are in Latin America itself, he is also interested in promoting growth for Hispanics in the United States as well. One of the his more recent comments is on the appointment of the singer Shakira to the presidential commission on education for Hispanics. According to Mr. Moran, this shows the continued dedication of the Obama administration to the education of Hispanics in the United States.

In the past, Daniel Chavez Moran has noted that the educational performance of Hispanics in the United States has lagged versus other ethnic groups including whites and Asians. This is not a sustainable path for the United States since Latinos make up a large portion of the population in the country. There is a need to make sure that all Hispanics graduate with a high school diploma or GED. Furthermore, there needs to be more emphasis on getting more Latinos to get into either college or vocational training so that they’re training for high wage skilled jobs that will continue to exist in the global economy.

With a lot of drivers for economic growth in the rest of Latin America, Daniel Chavez Moran notes that is important to make sure that the Hispanics in the United States are ready to trade with their friends south of the border. In particular, Brazil is going to host two major sporting events (Summer Olympics and the World Cup) during the next several years. Oil deposits found in Brazil and other Latin American countries will provide for other economic improvements as well. That is why it is important for Latino students in the United States to succeed in their education so that they’re qualified to help with the economic growth of the rest of Latin America.

The promotion of economic growth in Latin America cannot be sustained if there continues to be an education gap. Daniel Chavez Moran believes that in the long run, it is necessary for families as well as government and business to make education a top priority.
